Personal Project: Part 1
Nature at its Finest
I decided to venture out to Snowdonia National Park to capture the distinctive effects autumn has on our environment. The end of summer changing into the beginning of winter producing breathtaking colours and lighting. I decided to focus on reflections, as the location had such a stillness and beauty about it that I felt I had to capture it. I found taking the photo quite challenging because on this particular day the lighting was constantly changing, so I really had to watch my shutter speed settings to make sure my reflections were as clear as they could be.

Nature at its Finest
I took this image when on a family walk, the leaf instantly caught my eye, it looked as though it was caught in a time lapse because every other leaf around it had either fallen from the tree or changed to its autumnal colour. The shallow depth of field in this image allows us to see natures effect on the landscape, the earthy tones of autumn against the bright green of the summery leaf.

Here is another image I shot when at Snowdonia National Park in the autumn time, capturing the pastel colours that create a mesmerising reflection on the lake. I live in an area of such natural beauty, but you can have a tendency to take it for granted if you haven't captured the beauty in a image.

Shooting this image much tighter, I feel draws the eye into the subject and eliminates the background. The shallow depth of field was intentional, the softness as the fern falls out of shot draws the eye to the texture and colour of the fern. I wanted to make the simplest subject matter become beautiful thinking carefully about the composition used and the particular focus point.

I took this image with the composition 'Rule of Thirds' in mind. I learnt that if I placed my focal point in the centre of the frame then the eye tends to just focus on the subject. I decided to put my focal point at the left hand side of the frame making the eye wander around the rest of the image.

Male Model Shoot
For this project I decided I wanted to develop my skills in the natural lighting studio so I took up the opportunity of photographing a male model. I found this a challenge as I have always used female models, focusing on the female form which was a lot softer. I enjoyed being able to focus on just the models profile and facial features for change portraying a story behind the image.

Male Model Shoot
In this series of photographs one of my main priorities was lighting. To be able to achieve the look I had in mind I had to think carefully about managing the lighting and how I would change it using light reflectors and different coloured backdrops. This allowed me to achieve a classic, clean image with the shadowing on the left hand side of the face adding depth.

Shape/Pattern and Line within the Female Form
The idea behind this image was to create a photograph that looked as if it was from the 1940's, taking inspiration from the photographer Cecil Beaton and his images of the iconic movie star Audrey Hepburn. He really brought the true elegance, class and femininity out of his model, focusing on certain features of the body. This is what I wanted to achieve with my image. The light coming in from the left highlights my models neck and shoulder bone adding depth to my image as well as extenuating the curves of her neck creating the feminine look I was hoping to achieve.

Here is another image from the same shoot as above, the hat and gloves help carry on with the 1940's look, using inspiration from Cecil Beaton's work. Once again the light coming in from the left adds definition to the feminine features of my model but I am now gaining shadow to my image from the hat on the right adding depth. I used Adobe Photoshop to change the colouring of my photograph as I wanted to carry on with that particular era and I also believe it gives more of a contrast to my image.

Shape/Pattern and Line within the Female Form
I wanted to take an image that was very simple, going right back to the basics with nothing to distract the eye away from the pendant and the beauty of the lines in the models bare back. The negative space in the background is an aspect that has also helped with achieving the look I was hoping for with all the attention being on my model rather than having the distraction of a busy backdrop.

Shape/Pattern and Line within the Female Form
This is an image I took for a project on the subject 'Shape, Pattern and Line within the Female Form'. During my project I looked closely at the female form such as the hips, hand positions, waist and neck which are all features that make the model become very feminine. The photographer I was most inspired by for this particular shoot was John French, here I focused on the positioning of my models hands to enhance her femininity, either using them to frame her face or to gracefully hold her accessories.

This image is from the same shoot, looking at a different aspect of the female form. The particular pose my model is holding fitted in perfectly with my project, the left hand positioned on the waist bringing it in and the right arm positioned up opens the diamond shape of the models figure. I used a technique I researched when looking at John French's work, this aspect was the use of negative space helping achieve the drastic contrast between the models dress and the blank background.

Shape/Pattern and Line within the Female Form
This was the first time I had shot in a studio, it was a challenging yet worth while experience. I was able to achieve the look I had in mind for this project on 'Shape, Pattern and Line Within the Female Form', with the help of the blank backdrop of the studio and the natural lighting coming in through the window. I learnt the importance of managing natural lighting whether it needed to be reduced or increased to create an image that not only works well but works technically.

These two images were created taking the inspiration from a photographer I have previously researched called Patrick Winfield, focusing on a certain aspect of his work to use alongside my own ideas. I used a selection of separate shots of the landscape to build up one photograph. The grid technique stops the images from merging together, you get to see the beauty of each individual image as well as a whole photograph.

I took this image on a local beach as part of my project 'Image Within an Image'. The beach is most famous for its light house which I believed would be an ideal subject to shoot. I wanted to capture the lighthouse in a different manner so I decided to take along an old picture frame and take the photograph through it, fitting in well with my projects theme. I used Adobe Photoshop to be able to achieve the look I wanted, photoshopping out the hands that held the frame up.

This is the same beach and subject as the photograph above but I approached the subject differently. I researched into a photographer called Lee Friedlander who used the element Natural Framing in his work. He made me realise that I should think about my subject in a more interesting way so I decided to look at the lighthouse at a different angle, crouching down and looking through a washed up concrete block using it as a natural frame. I believe the way I have taken this image draws you into the subject as if you are looking through a lens.
